Food industry

The agri-food sector has evolved a lot in the last 30 years. The European market, the critical transformation of the distribution sector and the increased demands of consumers, have made it a dynamic and innovative industry. Food security, productive efficiency and sustainability are already determining differentiating factors.

“It’s only for large multinationals”, “my clients don’t ask me”, “we’ve never had a problem”. Year after year, the food alarms do not stop: Listeria in shredded meat, rapeseed oil, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), dioxins in poultry products, carcinogenic products in olive oil, salmonellosis, food poisoning in dining rooms. In such a dynamic and competitive sector, what was voluntary has become essential.

It is a path of no return. There are already standards in various European countries (Dutch HACCP Code, Danish HACCP Code…) to facilitate the implementation of the Food Safety Management System as required by Regulation (EC) 853/2004. In Spain, the different regulatory regulations already establish the requirement of HACCP systems.

Associations of distributors and retailers have developed the BRC Global Standard Food and the IFS International Food Standard. Their suppliers must apply that as a guarantee of quality and safety of the food sold as a private label.

Food safety and food hygiene don’t affect just to manufacturers. The fruit and vegetable sector, livestock sector, collective canteens (schools, companies, hospitals, residences), restaurants and franchises, packaging and products in contact with food also must be manufactured and processed following some acceptable practices. Standards like UNE-EN 15593 and GLOBALG.A.P.; and schemes as the European ELS license system for suitable products for celiacs, the WELFARE QUALITY, the AWIN reference for animal welfare and the Royal Decree 993/2014 for the export of products of animal origin are here, and they will stay.
