Cold-formed steel or aluminum structural elements UNE-EN 1090-4 and UNE-EN 1090-5. Is CE marking required?

Thursday 18, May 2023

The CE UNE-EN 1090-1 Marking is normative since 07/01/2014 in UNE-EN 1090-2 steel and UNE-EN 1090-3 aluminum structures.

UNE-EN 1090-4:2019 (EN 1090-4:2018) specifies the requirements for the manufacture and installation of cold-formed structural steel components and sheets and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor, wall and lining.

UNE-EN 1090-5:2017 (EN 1090-5:2017) establishes the technical requirements for cold-formed aluminum structural elements and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.

The structures covered by these standards can be, for example:

  • single or multi-layer roofs, where the load-bearing structure (lower layer) as well as the actual roof covering (upper layer) or both are composed of cold-formed structural components and sheets;
  • single or multi-layer walls, where the load-bearing structure (inner layer) as well as the actual skin (outer layer) or both are composed of cold-formed structural components and sheets; either
  • cold-formed component trusses.

The structures can be composed of a set of components and structural sheets made of steel in accordance with the EN 1090-4 Standard and others in aluminum in accordance with the EN 1090-5 Standard, that is, the existence of mixed structures is possible, according to different standards (eg UNE-EN 1090-2 and UNE-EN 1090-3).

The CE marking of steel and aluminum structures is regulated by the harmonized standard UNE-EN 1090-1:2011+A1:2012 (EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011), which indicates that ONLY the structural elements covered by EN 1090-2 and EN 1090-3 require CE Marking in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011 for construction products.

We manufacture cold-formed steel/aluminium structures according to EN 1090-4 and EN 1090-5. What do we do?

The establishment of a Factory Production Control System (SCPF) EN 1090-4:2018 or UNE-EN 1090-5:2017 is voluntary, but the existence of own standards that define the specifications, documentation, product characteristics constituents or manufacturing and assembly is a great advantage for the establishment of coherent and industry-specific systems.

When establishing a SCPF EN 1090-4 and EN 1090-5 essential guidelines must be taken into account, many of them common to EN 1090-2 and EN 1090-3:

  • Project execution class.
  • Declaration of conformity (voluntary, but recommended).
  • Control of raw materials (type of steel, compliance standards, welding material, …).
  • Manufacturing systems (eg forming, cutting, drilling, welding, mechanical fixing, …).
  • Assembly procedure or guidelines (eg setting out, tools, qualification, …).

Currently, companies from various fields have established factory production control systems in accordance with the UNE-EN 1090 family of standards on a voluntary basis, but seeking tangible results:

  • Accreditation of the products by an Independent Organization.
  • Updating and real and verifiable fluidization of the protocols, control plans and operating guidelines of the production area.
  • Definition and clarification of responsibilities and attributions.
  • Pyramid structure of the organization.
  • Establishment of the basic controls that today are required by companies that manufacture structures.
  • Enhancement of the service provided to the customer.
  • Public recognition, trust and credibility at the level of the different interest groups.

We provide solutions

Our work, in companies that want to standardize their processes and products in accordance with the EN 1090-4 or UNE-EN 1090-5 standards, is the design and development of the SCPF in accordance with the applicable standards (eg UNE-EN 508 -1:2022, UNE-EN 14782:2006, …). Our experience and knowledge of the EN 1090-1, EN 1090-2 and EN 1090-3 standards give us a great advantage in this phase of the project.

Previously, a check or analysis of the company is carried out in order to collect information from the organization (machinery, processes, personnel, constituent products or raw materials…) and make an estimate of the degree of compliance with EN 1090 and related standards.

Once the SCPF has been approved, our job is to help the company with the implementation. Although it seems the easiest, it is usually the phase that requires the most effort. Changing habits and customs is not easy.

Finally, after a final check, our job is to help the organization pass the inspection of the certifying body (AENOR, Bureau Veritas, Applus, OCA global, Lloyd’s Register, ICDQ, VerusCert, All World Certification,…). Each control body has a particular regulation that is the basis of its inspection.

Our Firm has been working in the field of CE Marking UNE-EN 1090-1 since 2012, two years before it became mandatory. We are one of the few engineering firms in Spain with a technical area specialized in EN 1090 and that works throughout the peninsula.

Since 2002 our Firm develops projects in the construction sector. Currently, we are one of the leading engineering firms in the application of sectoral standards in accordance with Regulation (EU) 305/2011.
