ISO 14064-1 Certification: Why quantify Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions?

Tuesday 20, May 2025

Society, public administrations and large corporations favour companies that measure and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

() UNE-EN ISO 14064-1:2019 provides an internationally recognised framework for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an organisation.

In a context where awareness of climate change is at an all-time high, adopting EN ISO 14064-1:2019 allows companies to enhance their brand, moving towards sustainable and responsible management.

What is ISO 14064-1:2018?

ISO 14064-1:2018 is the international standard that focuses on the quantification and reporting of GHG emissions at the organisational level.

Unlike UNE-EN ISO 14067:2019 which analyses GHG emissions at the product level, this standard assesses the carbon footprint generated by the entire company, according to its activity.

While GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) focuses on direct emissions (e.g. vehicles) and indirect emissions related to energy (e.g. electricity), ISO 14064-1:2018 takes into account other activities (personnel, purchasing, transport, …), i.e. upstream and downstream emissions.

EN ISO 14064-1 sets out the basis to be followed for the calculation of the carbon footprint:

  • Principles
  • GHG inventory boundaries
  • Quantification of GHG emissions and removals.
  • Mitigation activities
  • Quality management of the GHG inventory.
  • GHG reporting.
  • Role of the organisation in verification activities.
Why implement ISO 14064-1:2018 in your organisation?

The application of UNE-EN ISO 14064-1:2019 in an organisation has multiple benefits, both environmental and strategic:

  • Transparency and reputation: it strengthens the company’s image with customers, investors and administrations.
  • Contracting with public administrations: More and more tenders and public contracts require the company to demonstrate its climate impact.
  • Entry into the European, global and large company markets: The end consumer demands ‘green products’, a demand that is much more evident in markets with high environmental sensitivity, such as Germany, the Nordic countries or North America.
  • Regulatory compliance and regulatory anticipation: The European Union is establishing a regulatory framework where environmental aspects are basic, regulations that are being reflected in Spanish legislation, in the new Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 on construction products, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 on eco-design or the future Sustainable Mobility Law.
  • Cost reduction: Knowledge of the emissions generated provides information on consumption, optimising processes and resources and improving economic savings.
  • Roadmap towards decarbonisation: It enables realistic plans to be drawn up to reduce emissions and move towards low-carbon models.
Who is UNE-EN ISO 14064-1 aimed at?

EN ISO 14064-1:2019 is applicable to all types of organisations and companies, regardless of their size or sector. From manufacturing industries to public administrations, agriculture, food, construction or service companies, any entity interested in measuring, reducing and communicating its carbon footprint can benefit from its implementation.
