In February 2025 the new EN 1090-2:2018+A1:2024 has been published, which cancels and replaces EN 1090-2:2018. What does the regulatory change mean for steelwork manufacturers?
(OAK).- The new European standard UNE-EN 1090-2:2019+A1:2025 “Execution of steel and aluminium structures. Part 2: Technical requirements for steel structures”, establishes the new requirements for the manufacture of metallic steel constructions, both structures and structural steel components or kits. Therefore, it affects the Factory Production Control System of all the metallic components that require CE Marking in accordance with the UNE-EN 1090-1:2011+A1:2012 (EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011).
The EN-1090-2 establishes the necessary requirements for the manufacture of steel structures and ensures adequate levels of mechanical strength and stability, serviceability and durability. However, for the correct application of its specifications, it is necessary to apply different standards (ISO 3834, UNE-EN ISO 5817:2023, …).
For cold-formed steel elements and structures for roof, ceiling, slab, wall and cladding applications, UNE-EN 1090-2:2019+A1:2025 is not applicable and UNE-EN 1090-4:2019 (EN 1090-4:2018) is the standard that must be used.
EN 1090-2 is used by many manufacturers of metal components who do not have a reference standard but wish to establish standardized, recognized, and certifiable standards. These are companies that manufacture industrial structures, storage systems, metal shelving, temporary structures, etc.
UNE-EN 1090-2+A1 is a technical manufacturing standard. Although it has coexisted with the new Regulation (UE) 2024/3110 on construction products, it does not include any of principals axes on which the new European regulations are based, which are equally more appropriate for the future UNE-EN 1090-1.
Compared to the previous edition, the most notable changes contemplated by the EN 1090-2:2018+A1:2024 are as follows:
We provide solutions
Since 2012, OAK has been developing arrolla, CE marking projects and constrols systems for components and structural elements in carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Since 2000, we have been carrying out CE marking projects for other construction products (e.g. aggregates for concrete, breakwaters, precast concrete, …).
As a leading engineering company in regulatory projects, we advise and support manufacturers of metallic structures in obtaining the certificate of conformity and we act in all phases of the Factory Production Control System, intervening, of course, in the preparation of technical files, updating and harmonisation of regulations or the declaration of performance and conformity.
Our scope of action is national and international. We are currently developing CE marking projects in Spain (Andalusia, Canary Islands, Asturias, Catalonia, …) and South America (Mexico, …).
Since 2017, we develop sustainability projects for construction products, such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPD / EPD) UNE-EN 15804:2012+A2:2020/AC:2021 or Carbon footprints UNE-EN ISO 14064-1:2019, now fully aligned with the requirements of the New Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 on Construction Products.
